Learn about our story and mission

Segmentive is a pioneer in video segmentation for mobile.

Segmentive’s mission is to push the boundaries of mobile machine vision, empowering people across the globe to create impossible moments in real-time using cutting-edge technology. We know that video segmentation is a highly complex and challenging problem that is yet to be fully solved and this is exactly what drives our passion.

The problems we saw

When Segmentive’s Co-founder Thomas was working as a visual effects specialist on a number of sets in Hollywood, he became frustrated with the limitations of green screen technology. During the filming process, directors, producers and actors were all faced with the difficult task of imagining what each special effects scene would look like.

Additionally, post-production techniques to replace the green screen backgrounds with the special effects backgrounds were lengthy, requiring significant compute power and large teams of chroma key experts.

At the same time, Thomas noticed that the software on some conventional mobiles and laptops allowed users to create live, green screen style videos without a green screen. However, these devices lacked the architecture and power required to create high-quality content and, as a result, the videos filmed were characterised by motion blur, unclear edges and disappearing subjects.

How we are solving them

In 2015, Cinector was launched by Thomas, Tobias and Enrico. Pioneering a completely new approach, Cinector has established itself as the market leader in advanced green screen video processing segmentation software for laptops. State-of-the-art algorithms and machine learning techniques empower users to film live, high definition videos, using only a laptop and a green screen.

In early 2019, Segmentive was established in order to take our proprietary technology to the next level with the innovation of segmentation techniques for mobile and without the need for green screen. Our talented team is split between the Segmentive headquarters in Berlin and our second office in Mittweida.

Meet our computer vision experts

We’re an international team of data scientists, machine vision specialists and technology enthusiasts, passionate about building disruptive semantic segmentation technology for mobile.

Elias Vansteenkiste is an Artificial Intelligence Architect at Segmentive.
He obtained his Ph.D. in Electronics at the Ghent University, where he worked on heuristics for NP-complete problems in Electronic Design Automation.
During his postdoc, Elias pivoted into the deep learning hype via a Kaggle competition to improve lung cancer prediction. He left the academic world to work as a research scientist on generative models for video reconstruction and real-time video anonymisation. His favourite programming language is Python, because of its clean design.
When Elias is not working he is trying to get rid of his fear of idling GPUs. You can find him in the mountains skiing and hiking, or in the sea diving. Elias lives by the motto ‘Keep your learning rate high’, which comes in handy in the rapidly growing field of Artificial Intelligence.

Noah Kutscher is an Artificial Intelligence Engineer at Segmentive. He loves working on groundbreaking technology and has spent the majority of his career in the computer programming industry, coding in different fields and languages across a multitude of projects. Noah is currently furthering his skillset through pursuing a degree in General and Digital Forensics at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. When he isn’t busy working or studying, you can find Noah making music, acting or occasionally playing computer games. His favourite programming language is C++ because he loves to work at the core of things, with full control yet also total freedom. Noah lives by the motto ‘Never regret anything, because at one time it was exactly what you wanted’.

Enrico Pisko is the Co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Segmentive. With a degree in Information Technology and Industrial Management from Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, Enrico is driven by new challenges that push the boundaries of learning. Enrico describes his most notable professional achievement to date as the first release of the software for Cinector, Segmentive’s parent company. In his spare time, you’ll find Enrico walking his Spanish dog or playing video and board games with friends. He is a massive fan of the film ‘V for Vendetta’ and his favourite programming language is Python. He likes that it’s easy to understand and learn but has multiple uses cases – from machine learning (tensor flow), to game development (pygame) and web frameworks (django).

Gina Starke is a part-time Artificial Intelligence Engineer at Segmentive. She is currently furthering her skillset through pursuing a degree in General and Digital Forensics at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. Gina is an expert in Semantic Segmentation and, when she is not busy with Segmentive projects, investigates the power of image recognition with the German police forces. If you’re up for real life challenges you can also take part in one of her yoga sessions.

Kai Stüdemann is an Artificial Intelligence Engineer at Segmentive. Kai completed his degree in Information Technology at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences and has a passion for machine learning. Driven by curiousity, ingenuity, and thoroughness, Kai believes that his top professional accomplishment to date was building a whole suite of infrastructure applications (Installer, Launcher, Updater, Crash Reporter) in less than a month. Outside of work, Kai spends his time playing video games and watching films like ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’. Kai believes that the ultimate coding language is C++ because it is a high level language that still allows you to write code that is pretty ‘close to the metal’.

Deepak Singh Mohan is a Data Scientist at Segmentive. Placing value on discipline, perseverance and hard work, Deepak graduated from the Technical University of Darmstadt with a master’s in Machine Learning. Deepak’s biggest professional achievement to date was the completion of a two-year software update project, during which time he gained increasing responsibility within the role and was eventually promoted to onsite engineer. He enjoys the energetic and challenging environment at the Segmentive office and believes that this atmosphere allows new ideas to continually flourish. In his free-time, Deepak loves watching football, spending time with friends and hiking or climbing outdoors. With a passion for history, Deepak can also be found visiting historical sites across Germany and beyond.

Lutz Röllig helps the founders growing Segmentive. With over twenty years in growth management, Lutz is specialised in helping digital companies pursue their growth path. He has held a variety of CEO and board advisory roles and has been able to tick off several funding rounds and two successful exits from his professional bucket list. Lutz not only believes in the power of a great plan, but the power of an inspired team behind the plan, and he is driven by his desire to deliver results whilst still having fun. Beyond his professional work Lutz enjoys hanging out with his twins and, when he’s feeling particularly daring, hang gliding. Additionally, Lutz firmly believes that “a chocolate a day keeps the doctor away”.

Thomas Schmieder is the Co-founder of Segmentive. Thomas has worked across a variety of creative and technical fields for over a decade, gaining experience in acting, software development, film production and game production. Driven by a mission to make film production accessible to all, Thomas is known for his enthusiasm and ability to rally the team around this goal. Thomas lists coaching Hollywood visual effect teams on virtual film production and setting up a successful gaming research branch at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences as his top two professional achievements to date. Outside of the office, Thomas enjoys trying out new activities, exercising and meditating on his terrace. Thomas’ all-time favourite film is ‘Inception’ and he lives by the motto ‘Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always’.
